What is your pain trying to tell you?

As a massage therapist I see clients with various presentations of pain on a daily basis. Often there is a “rational” explanation for our discomfort. For example too many hours hunched over a computer will usually result in tight shoulders and headaches.

But have you ever thought there could be something else “weighing on our shoulders” besides the obvious postural and habitual patterns? Could there be an emotional component to our pain aswell?

You may have heard of Louise Hay. She is a 91-year old teacher, author and the head of a publishing company Hay House. For five decades she has been educating the masses about the connection between the body and mind, mental patterns and physical illnesses.

Louise Hay believes that behind our physical discomfort there is a mental or emotional pattern that keeps us stuck or unwell. Once we identify this mental dis-chord we can reverse the thought (and therefore the health condition) with the use of affirmations. Affirmations are like positive statements, which spoken to ourselves repeatedly, will replace our old broken record and help us move to a healthier, happier state of being.

I find these body-mind connections fascinating! And very often, interestingly accurate.

I am not implying that “positive thinking” alone is the answer to every illness out there. In my line of work, best results often occur as a combination of bodywork, such as massage, fascial release, postural correction as well as adequate nutrition, exercise, sleep as well as mental, emotional release and/or spiritual practise.

For this blog post I have picked the most common health issues that I see as a massage therapist from Louise Hay’s book You Can Heal Your Life.

In cursive, you find the affirmation for the condition. Affirmations work best when repeated over and over, the more the better. So write them down, say them out loud or silently in your head while brushing your teeth, driving to work…. or even better, whilst lying on the massage table!


LEFT SIDE OF BODY: The feminine side. Represents receptivity, taking in, women, mother, love.
Affirmation: My feminine energy is beautifully balanced.

RIGHT SIDE OF BODY: Giving out, letting go, masculine energy, men, the father.
Affirmation: I balance my masculine energy easily and effortlessly.

NECK: Refusing to see another’s side or position. Stubbornness. Who/what is being a pain in the neck?
Affirmation: It is in flexibility I see. There are endless ways of doing and seeing things. I am safe.

JAW, TMJ: Anger, resentment, revenge. Affirmation: I am willing to change the thought that created this condition in me. I love and approve of myself. I am safe.

SHOULDERS: Carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders. Feeling like life is a burden.
Affirmation: I choose to allow all of my experiences to be joyous and loving


  • UPPER: Lack of emotional support, or feeling unloved.
    Affirmation: I love and approve of myself. Life supports and loves me.
  • MIDDLE: Guilt. Stuck in all that stuff back there or Get off my back.
    Affirmation: I release the past. I am free to move forward with love in my heart.
  • LOWER: Financial woes and concerns. Fear of money. Lack of financial support.
    Affirmation: I trust the process of life. All I need is taken care of. I am safe.

SPINE: Flexible support of life.
Affirmation: I am supported by life.

HIPS: Fear of going forward in major decisions.
Affirmation: I am in perfect balance. I move forward in life with ease and with joy at every age.

LEGS: Fear of the future, not being able to carry things forward.
Affirmation: I move forward with confidence and joy, knowing that all is well in my future.

KNEES:  Stubborn ego and pride. Inability to bend. Inflexibility. Won’t give in.
: I bend, flow with ease & all is well.

FEET: Fear of the future or not wanting to move forward.
Affirmation: I understand clearly and I am willing to change with the times. I am safe.

HANDS: Grasping on to tight, not wanting to let go. Not ‘handling’ things well.
Affirmation: I choose to handle all my experiences with love and with joy and with ease.

WRISTS: Represents movements & ease.
Affirmation: I handle all my experiences with wisdom, with love & ease.

ANXIETY / NERVOUSNESS: Distrust the natural flow & process of life. Affirmation: I love and approve of myself and I trust in the process of life. I am safe.

ARTHRITIS: Feeling unloved, criticism, resentment and bitterness. Feeling not good enough.
Affirmation: I am love. I now choose to love and approve of myself. I see others with love.

CARPAL TUNNEL: Anger and frustrations at life’s seeming injustices.
Affirmation: I now choose to create a life that is abundant. I am at ease.

CIRCULATORY PROBLEMS: the inability to feel and express emotions in a positive way. Affirmation: I am free to circulate love and joy in every part of my world. I love my life.

DEPRESSION: Anger, hopelessness.
Affirmation: I now go beyond other people’s fears and limitations. I create my own life.

DIZZINESS: Flighty, scattered thinking.
Affirmation: I am deeply centered and at peace with life. It is safe for me to be alive and joyous.

HEADACHE: Self-criticism. Not wanting to accept what is going on.
: I love and approve of myself. I see myself and what I do with eyes of love. I am safe.

NUMBNESS:  Withholding love, going dead mentally.  Affirmation: I share my feelings and my love. I respond to love in everyone.

PAIN: Self punishment, feeling emotional guilt.
Affirmation: I lovingly release the past. They are free and I am free. All is well in my heart now.

SCIATICA: Being hypocritical. Fear of money & of the future.
Affirmation: I move into my greater good. My good is everywhere & I am safe & secure.

SPASMS: Tightening of thoughts due to fear.
Affirmation: I release, I relax and let go. I am safe in life.

SWELLING: Being stuck in thinking. Clogged, painful ideas.
Affirmation: My thoughts flow freely & easily. I move through ideas with ease.
